(Adair) Multiple Sclerosis is a disease affecting the central nervous system. The immune system attacks the protective layer around nerve fibers and causes inflammation and lesions making it difficult for the brain to send signals to the rest of the body.
There are more than 200,000 cases annually in the U.S., and there is no cure. People from 18 to 55 are more commonly affected, and the disease appears to be more common in women.
Deb Richter is the President and co-founder of ACG MS, an acronym for Adair, Cass, and Guthrie MS. Richter says this is a debilitating disease. She formed this new non-profit organization to support those dealing with this disease.
Richter says the organization will allow dialogue with others suffering from the disease, sharing a successful treatment that might help others or what to expect from the condition.
There is a statewide organization-MS, Moments, based in Des Moines that provides financial help to M.S. sufferers. On that list are acupuncture, massages, and a gym membership.
Richter says people wanting to join the group can go to ACG MS Warriors on Facebook or email at acgmswarriors@yahoo.com. Richter will place individuals suffering from this disease in a private group. Richter says one of the organization’s other goals is to raise money and send it to EMS Warriors.
