(Atlantic) Felicia Frame appeared in front of the Atlantic City Council on Wednesday evening to discuss the topic of backyard hens. The City Council currently has an ordinance banning livestock on residences within city limits.
Frame asked the Council to revisit the ordinance.
Frame noted a considerable increase in people raising food for themselves, friends, and neighbors.
Frame says everyone should have the right to raise their food on their property. Frame says during World War I and World War IL, people were encouraged to raise their food to help each other out.
Frame says she realizes there are issues with noise etc., but she feels chicken coups would help with the problem and possibly limit the number of birds to around 10 per residence.
The City Council didn’t comment on Frame’s request.
In October 2021, the Atlantic City Council approved a request to allow chickens at 1609 East 22nd Street. The Council approved the request because the residence was over 2 acres.
The ordinance reads as follows:
- It is unlawful for a person to keep livestock within the City except by written consent of the Council or in compliance with the City’s zoning regulations.
- It is unlawful for a person who impounds or confines livestock in any place to fail to provide the livestock with care consistent with customary animal husbandry practices or deprive the livestock of necessary sustenance or injure or destroy livestock by any means that causes pain or suffering in a manner inconsistent with standard animal husbandry practices.
