Des Moines) The National Weather Service says scattered thunderstorms are expected later this afternoon into mid-evening. A few severe storms are possible, with the main threat from large hail and a tornado or two. Damaging wind gusts may also occur.
Craig Cogil is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines. He says the main threat of severe weather is in west central and northwest Iowa.
This afternoon, heat index values could reach the mid to upper 90s across much of the area. Cogil says another round of storms will move into west central and northwest Iowa on Thursday.
Cogil says areas to the south will remain dry for the most part.
Another round of storms is expected Thursday night from western to central Iowa. These may be severe, with damaging winds the primary concern.
