(Washington D.C.) Iowa District #3 Congresswoman Cindy Axne addressed the U.S. supply chain crisis during a hearing with industry officials. The Iowa Congresswoman spoke to industry experts about ongoing disruptions to U.S. supply chains. She sought input on solutions Congress can implement to help alleviate bottlenecks and workforce shortages that contribute to delays and other problems for Iowa businesses and families.
Rep. Axne highlighted her concerns about a shortage of shipping containers typically used to transport Iowa’s exports to other countries, as it has become more profitable for shipping companies to return those containers overseas without picking up U.S. cargo.
Mike Durkin, President, and CEO of Leprino Foods Company says this is is an issue that escalated to a point where he called it a crisis.
Rep. Axne highlighted the investments in easing supply chain disruptions when Congress took up the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). This bipartisan infrastructure bill passed the U.S. Senate earlier this year.
The IIJA would invest $20 billion to modernize U.S. ports and includes more than $500 billion to upgrade transportation systems and surface transportation infrastructure.
