(Atlantic) The Atlantic City Council approved a request to allow chickens at 1609 East 22nd Street following a hearing Wednesday evening.
The Council heard from Sara Strouth who lives on the 2.35 acre property with her family. She said the chickens are currently located closer to 22nd Street, but they could be moved if needed.
There were no comments from the public during the hearing. Councilwoman Linda Hartkopf made the motion to approve the request.
Councilwoman Grace Garrett felt this should also be a case-by-case basis.
Councilman Gerald Brink disagreed.
Councilman Richard Casady had stated the same.
Councilman Jim Behrens also feels this is a case-by-case basis.
City Administrator John Lund said the current ordinance does state that farm animals are banned, but the final sentence says ‘unless otherwise given approval by the Council’.
The Council voted 5 to 2 to approve the request to allow chickens.
Atlantic Code Enforcement Officer Kris Erickson said she would like anyone that has been approved by the Council to be given written consent so they have proof of permission from the Council on hand.
