(Carroll) Taye Vonnahme scored three touchdowns to lead Kuemper past Atlantic 34-0 in a non-district football game at Carroll on Friday night.
Vonnahme carried the ball 16 times for 186 yards, and Cooper Pottebaum went 5-10 passing for 78-yards to lead Kuemper. The Knights rolled up 318 yards of total offense, 240 on the ground, and 78-yards through the air.
Dante Hedrington led the Trojans’ ground game on 17 carries for 54-yards. Caden Andersen was 5-18 throwing the ball for 43-yards. The Trojans gained 123-yards of total offense, with 80-yards on the ground, and 43-yards passing.
Atlantic kept the game close early. A holding penalty put the Knights in the hole on its opening drive, but eight plays later Vonnahme broke away on a 47-yard touchdown run to give the home team a 7-0 lead. Junior Quarterback Cooper Pottebaum fired a 30-yard strike to Nate Overmohle setting up Vonnahmes’ touchdown capping off an eight-play 90-yard drive. But that would be all of the scoring in the first half.
The Knights broke away with two touchdowns in the third quarter and put the game away with two more scores in the final stanza to seal the deal. The Kuemper defense played a big part in the Offensive success picking off four Trojan passes. Cooper Pottebaum scored on a five-yard run, and Taye Vonnahme raced to the end zone on a 63-yard carry to push the score to 20-0 at the end of the third quarter.
The Knights closed the door on the Trojans in the final quarter on a Vonnhame four-yard run, and a Vonnahme five-yard run- fumbled into the end zone, and teammate Carter Pudenze pounced on it, to give the Knights a 34-0 final.
Isaac Evans led the Knights defensively with eight tackles, two sacks, and four tackles for loss. Cal Wanninger, six tackles, and Max Pietig, Koby Lampman, Benjamin Gerken, and Nate Overmohle each had one interception.
Easton O’Brien led Atlantic with nine tackles, two for loss, Ethan Sturm had six tackles including five solos.
Atlantic hosts Shenandoah next Friday night. Kuemper travels to Greene County.
