(Greenfield) Nodaway Valley/O-M senior Ethan Blomme is this week’s selection for the Unsung Hero award. An interview with Blomme will air on KSOM during halftime when the Wolverines host Shenandoah on Friday night.
Blomme played a few games last season, but was born with hip dysplasia and suffered an injury. He describes the recovery process as very long and admits he had a lot of negativity at first. “It was pretty tough.” He says his perspective changed about halfway through the second game he was on the sidelines for. “I was like, ‘This is my role now, I’m going to accept it and just try to make sense of it.'”
“I just recently got cleared to jog which really helps out. I can run and get water or jerseys or things for the people that need it. I help the coaches out and they sometimes consult me on coaching decisions.” He’d rather be on the field, but he’s glad to help in some way. “To be honest I prefer to play football, but that’s kind of out of the picture so I like being on the team. It’s a good way to be out there and I didn’t have to give it up.”
Blomme saw his teammates get off to a great start to the season last Friday night when they claimed the Battle for the Rock with a win against Mount Ayr. “That was pretty incredible. It was pretty awesome to witness even if I wasn’t playing. It was awesome. It meant a lot. It was a big confidence booster.” He says the biggest thing he’s learned from football is if you put in effort into it it will pay off.
Coach Seth Comly says of Blomme, “He’s tremendously important. He’s right there willing to do things and he’s a big part of our program.”
