(Des Moines) The National Weather Service in Des Moines is forecasting recording-breaking high temperatures of 100-degrees today. A Heat Advisory is in effect for all of west-central and southwest Iowa from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today. Peak heat indices from 100 to 105-degrees are forecast for this afternoon and early evening.
Roger Vachalek, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, says the last 100-degree day in the Atlantic was in 2018, on May 27, and the following day, May 28.
Vachalek points to 2012 as a brutally hot year for most of the area. The temperature reached 100-degrees on July 23, 101, on July 24, 100, on July 25, and 102, on July 26, and 100-degrees on August 8. This is the last time this region experienced this kind of heat for a prolonged period of time. “Where we were in the ’90s and some 100-degree readings,” said Vachalek. “Generally speaking, these temperatures will be much above average. In fact, we’ll probably be breaking records across the state for Iowa for some of these high temperatures.”
The forecast high for today is 100-degrees. The forecast high for Friday is 92, and 90-degrees on Saturday, and Sunday. The daytime high on Monday will be 75-degrees, and 78 on Tuesday.
