(Audubon) The Audubon girls track team is scheduled to be in action Thursday at AHSTW’s Co-Ed Meet.
The Wheelers are coming off of a win Monday at Nodaway Valley. Coach Tony Konkler was pleased with several performances including Elizabeth Zaiger in the throws. “Elizabeth in the discus increased her PR out to 107 feet so she’s throwing really, really well. She spent a lot of time in the weight room over the winter. I think you’re going to see that really pay off. She scratched on one in the shot put that coach Tyler Christensen said would have been over 38 feet, so that would have been nice.”
Konkler says Jaci Christensen is improving in the discus as well. They have a lot to celebrate on the track including Grace Slater in distance races and a host of others. “Hannah Thygesen is a really solid half miler. She got down to 2:33 Monday and she’s way ahead of where she was as a freshman. I think her best time going into districts was around 2:34. She got down to 2:29 and eventually 2:25 at state to get a medal there. She’s really on track for the goal of getting down as close to the 2:20 mark as she can by the end of the year. It’s nice to have her anchor the 4X400, Sprint Medley, and Distance Medley. In those races she’s joined by Abigail Zaiger, Madison Steckler, and Mattie Nielsen.”
Konkler adds the Shuttle Hurdle Relay is stronger than its been in a long time plus Kodie Sporrer and Audrey Jensen had good showing in the 400M Hurdles on Monday in Greenfield. Katelyn Nielsen turned in a PR Long Jump on Monday.
Thursday’s Co-Ed Meet in Avoca is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. “We are going to try to run more individual stuff. I’m going to get Madi Steckler and Mattie Nielsen into some sprints. I’m going to get Hannah into a 400. Then hopefully in the Carroll meet, which would be the following Monday, that might be the first time we throw the 4X800 together.”
Coach Konkler says the team had high expectations coming into the season, but the recent passing of longtime track coach Bob Clark has inspired the girls to push for even bigger goals. “There was just something special about how he did things because the girls really, really responded to him. That’s going to really be missed.”
