(Atlantic) Trojan head tennis coach Mike McDermott has a big roster to work with this season.
The one with the biggest resumé would be senior Grant Sturm. “Grant Sturm is back, he’ll be our leader this year. He just looks fantastic, a state qualifier as a sophomore, but now a senior. His brother Ethan Sturm played for us as a freshman kind of in some spot playing time and got in some matches. He looks really good too and then just a host of other guys with 15 total guys and 28 girls, but I really like everybody that we have.”
The girls team has more experience than they’ve had in a while. “Really excited about them. Just a ton of returners there. They were all young players two years ago, but they almost all return. Gene Martinez is returning as a senior, Molly McFadden, Tessa Grooms, Nellie Grooms, Olivia Engler, Addie Schmitt is back as a junior that had some time as a freshman, and a few newcomers sprinkled in there that we are just really excited about.”
McDermott says the name of the game is ‘compete.’ “Be competitive to start with. We want to go out and compete. I really like what we’ve seen in practice. For being off a couple of years everyone seems to be really hungry and even our newcomers. That’ll help us down the road. Our seniors want to compete and they want to have their name up there for a potential conference championship so that’s what we’re looking for.”
The Trojans will oppose Creston on April 8th.
