(Des Moines) A gun bill is heading for Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ desk, making it optional for Iowans to acquire a permit to buy or carry a handgun.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds stated she is going to review the bill before making a decision thoroughly. “I’ve been clear that when discussing gun violence, we need to take a holistic approach,” said Reynolds. “There is not one single answer; we need to follow the laws on the books, and coordination must be in place amongst the agencies.”
Supporters say the bill improves Iowans’ fundamental right of self-defense outlined in the Second Amendment. Opponents of the bill fear it will make Iowa more dangerous for police and citizens and challenging to stop gun violence before it happens. Reynolds admits the state needs to remain proactive in addressing mental and behavioral health issues. “We will continue to take a look at everything before making a decision.”
The proposed bill allows law-abiding citizens the right to carry a firearm for their self-defense or others without first having to obtain a government permission slip in the form of a permit. A person can still get access to acquire or carry, but it will no longer be required. A person wishing to obtain a license to carry will undergo a background check, and citizens can use the permit for the next five-years to purchase firearms.
