(Harlan) An Eagle from the SOAR Rehabilitation Center is heading home. Shelby County Naturalist Christina Roelofs will release the eagle during a hybrid in-person and virtual Bald Eagle Program at 5:30 p.m., on Friday, March 26, at Nishna Bend Recreation Area and on Zoom.
SOAR is an acronym for saving our avian resources. The 501(c)(3) organization established in 1999 is dedicated to saving avian resources through raptor rehabilitation, education, and research.
Roelofs will release the eagle at the northwest corner of the shop. Onlookers can view the release from the trail along the north side of Nishna Bend (on Maple Road).
The other option is below the big hill behind the shop or nature center. Roelofs says no one is allowed past the tower. She doesn’t want people any closer than the nesting tower. The eagle needs people far enough away to feel comfortable.
Roelofs will talk briefly about eagles and SOAR (the rehabilitation center) prior to releasing the Eagle. Those in person will not be able to hear this talk unless you sign up for the Zoom and log in to hear it. If you chose to come in person, please be sure to keep your social distance from other family groups.
