Janet Bornholdt, 84, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa.
Janet Darlene (Petersen) Bornholdt, the daughter of Hans and Violet (Molgaard) Petersen was born May 19, 1936. She attended school in Wiota, graduating from Wiota High School. On October 15, 1957, she was united in marriage to Arlin LeRoy Bornholdt. Together they farmed outside of Marne, IA, for 27 years. She loved living on the farm and being a farm wife. Arlin passed away May 15, 1987, at the age of 54 years old.
After the passing of Arlin, Janet moved to Atlantic. She worked as a waitress for many years with the most resent being four years at the Westside Diner in Atlantic. Just about everyone in town knew her and loved her warm heart. She had a wonderful smile that her customers were greeted with when coming in for a meal. Janet was a very simple, down to earth woman, who loved the simple things in life. She loved building doll houses, taking care of her cat “Lucky”, and crocheting 50 afghans for family and friends.
She is survived by sisters, Phyllis Hoegh of Elk Horn, IA, and Barbara Stenberg of Rowland, TX; an uncle, Merlyn Molgaard of Elk Horn, IA; brother-in-law, Robert Bornholdt of Elk Horn; sisters-in-law, Darlene (Bornholdt) Hess of Harlan, Jean Bornholdt of Walnut, Mickey Bornholdt of Atlantic and Joan Bornholdt of Marne, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Violet Petersen; husband, Arlin Bornholdt; and many in-laws, Calvin Hoegh, Ted Stenberg, Dewey Hess, Judy Bornholdt, Donald and Marlis Bornholdt, Ross Bornholdt, Max Bornholdt, Helen and John Marxen, Janice and Wilbert Andersen, and Everett and Judy Bornholdt.
A private funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA. The funeral will be recorded and will be available on the funeral home’s website later that day. Burial will take place at Brighton Township Cemetery near Marne, IA.
An open visitation with no family present will be from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA.
Memorials may be directed to the Danish Immigrant Museum or the Danish Windmill both in Elk Horn, IA, or to Hospice of the Midwest in Guthrie Center, IA.
