(Greenfield) Adair County Engineer Nick Kaufman says the paved roads are in good shape across the county. He says the main thrust now is clearing the gravel roads.
“The paved roads are in good shape, the main focus now is on the gravel roads,” said Kaufman. “We have everyone out, and some of them started as early as 4:00 a.m., so it’s going to be a long day. We’ll work until five o’clock this afternoon and start up again early tomorrow morning.”
Kaufman says conditions vary on the gravel roadways where there are drifts in some places, other areas aren’t too bad. He says the crews are holding up well, and break downs have been kept to a minimum. There are nine trucks and two spares covering seven routes. The county has 11 motor graders and one Oshkosh truck currently clearing the roadways.
Kaufman says the goal is to have all the roadways cleared by tomorrow. He says the County is trying to budget for one more machine, saving road crews an extra half-day. “With one more machine running, I think we could get everything open in one day,” said Kaufman.
There are 794 miles of gravel roads and around 125 miles of pavement in Adair County.
