(Area) Paddlefish tags are now available through the Iowa DNR. The season runs February 1st through April 30th.
Fisheries Biologist Bryan Hayes says the paddlefish season on the Missouri River in Iowa has only existed for about five years. “Paddlefish are kind of a unique fish species. They are a filter feeder so when you are fishing for them you are snagging. They don’t really go after bait or lures so it’s a snagging season for paddlefish.”
Anyone interested in participating must apply for a tag. “That period to apply for tags starts December 15th. So between December 15th and December 31st you can apply for your first tag. If any tags are left over or remaining you can apply for a second tag January 1st through January 7th.”
Tags are limited. “950 resident tags available along the Missouri River and 50 non-resident tags. 1,000 tags available. To apply for those tags go online to iowadnr.gov and apply for those paddlefish tags.”
Tags will be sent out by mail before the February 1st Opener.
