Steve was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. He attended rural schools for three years before transferring to the Audubon Community Schools, graduating as the Valedictorian of the High School Class of 1971. He then attended Iowa State University for a year before returning to Audubon, where he worked alongside his father as a carpenter.
In 1977, he was united in marriage to Ruth Nielsen at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton. They were blessed with two sons: Jon and Daniel. He was employed as a foreman for May Construction for several years until 1992, when he started his own construction company that he operated for five years. Following that, he worked at Sky Jack for five years, then Handlos Family Farms until he retired in 2013 due to failing health.
On November 29, 2010, he was united in marriage to Annette Crawley at the Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton, Iowa. Steve and Annette cherished their road trips together out in the country, taking in all the scenery. In his spare time he loved to fix things if he wasn’t fishing or hunting. Steve was a jokester and loved to tell everyone his jokes, whether they were clean or dirty. Most of all, he treasured his time spent with his family, especially, with his grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his son, Daniel Christensen; his parents; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harley and Edna Crawley; his brother-in-law, James Crawley; and his sister-in-law, Doris Card.
