(Area) Iowa’s youth deer hunting season begins Saturday.
The season will run through October 4th. Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR says youth must be accompanied by a mentor. “It’s an opportunity for the youth to learn to hunt deer. It takes place with a mentor. They get to hunt early in the season when the weather is nice and the deer are basically undisturbed.”
Youth tags that go unfilled can be used later in the season. “Last year there were about 10,000 youth tags issued and 3,500 were reported harvested by youth hunters. The youth tags, if not filled by October 4th, can be used during any of the other regular deer seasons.”
Hayes comments on the purpose of a youth season. “These youth hunts should be enjoyable, adventurous, and safe.” Youth Water Fowl season is Saturday and Sunday, September 19th and 20th in the north zone. The south zone Youth Water Fowl season is next weekend on September 26th and 27th.
