(Des Moines) During her press conference this morning, Governor Kim Reynolds called the Des Moines School Board’s action on a return to learn plan “disappointing”.
Reynolds said the Des Moines School Board met last night to determine a course of action following a court decision that reaffirmed the details of the return to learn plan. The Board voted 4 to 3 to prepare to implement a hybrid learning model.
Reynolds said when Des Moines Public Schools submitted their return to learn plan to the state on July 1st they submitted a hybrid plan that was close to being compliant with state law, but instead of working with the Department of Education to get into compliance the district went backwards.
Reynolds said earlier this week a number of parents held a press conference to advocate on behalf of the district’s most vulnerable students; minorities, as well as those with disabilities and behavioral health issues. She said they strongly encouraged the school board to move ahead swiftly to get students back in the classroom. Reynolds said her message to the parents of Des Moines is “We will continue fighting for you to get the kids back in the classroom again safely and responsibly”.
