(Atlantic) The Cass County Board of Supervisors discussed speed limits to and from the new rock quarry south of Atlantic (including a portion of 620th Street) at their meeting this morning.
The discussion was held because at last week’s meeting three county citizens asked the board to consider what can be done to mitigate safety and environmental problems on roadways south of Atlantic due to increased traffic following the opening of a quarry south of Atlantic west of Highway 71 on Lansing Road.
Cass County Engineer Trent Wolken brought it what he proposed based on topography and the variable curves.
Wolken said there are some other issues that need to be addressed as well.
Wolken said another thing they can do is put in some field or farm entrance warning signs with flags.
The Supervisors discussed lowering the speed limit a bit more to 40 mph. Supervisor Frank Waters wondered if the speed limit could even be enforced.
Supervisors Chairman Steve Baier said a big part of this is being good neighbors.
After a lengthy discussion the Board decided they would like to see a 40 mph speed limit and additional signage. No action was taken at today’s meeting; action will be placed on a future agenda.
In other news, the Supervisors approved establishing an amount in resolution requesting reimbursement for eligible costs related to the COVID-19 public health emergency from the Iowa COVID-19 Government Relief Fund. The state allocation for Cass County from the CARES fund was $162,734.90. The Supervisors also approved the fiscal year 2019-2020 Urban Renewal Report.
