(Atlantic) Better Breakfast Month is celebrated in September.
Cass County Health System Clinical Dietitian Beth Olsen says skipping breakfast won’t do you any favors. “If you skip breakfast to lose weight it can actually have the opposite effect. By starting your day with a balanced meal you are less likely to over eat later in the day.”
Getting the day started with a solid meal is especially beneficial for kids. “With school starting we know breakfast is tied to their school performance as well as their performance after school on the field after school. Being fueled appropriately all day can help with that. It’s really the right thing to do to help foster a healthy start to our day.”
Whole grains and proteins are a good place to start. Olsen says anytime you can get whole grains and proteins its a recipe to help keep you fuller longer and kick off your day successfully. “I know mornings can be crunched especially for parents with little kids trying to get them out the door. Have some healthy options ready to go even if you have to eat them in the car on the way or when you first get to work. If your kids need to eat at school, schools offer nutritious breakfast for kids to start and fuel their day correctly.”
