(Area) A virtual meeting to gauge interest in a Southwest Iowa fishing team will be held this week.
Bob Harris says a fishing tournament among grand kids has led to a vision of much more. He’ll host a zoom call this Thursday (September 3rd) at 8:00 p.m. to present more info. “So many opportunities for kids in fishing through BassMasters and Bass Federation. I asked them and they were all on board. That’s where it started and I’m just going to see if there’s any other interest out there to form a junior and high school team and see what we can do.”
Harris says there are currently six high school teams throughout Iowa. While there isn’t an official state championship, the Bass Federation does hold a statewide tournament as well as national and world championships. One of his grand kids took 2nd in the state of Iowa and another was runner-up in Nebraska.
He views it as a good learning opportunity for the kids. “Learn about structure and conservation and conservation and give them some life skills and really put a program together.” He adds, “We want to grow them into young women and young mend and give them some life skills that they can use for the rest of their life.”
Harris says they have enough people to start a team right now, but would like to see who else might be interested. You don’t have to have your own boat to get started.
