(Guthrie Center) Official results are not yet available due to technical difficulties, but ACGC got their 2020 cross country campaign underway with a meet at SE Valley on Thursday.
The meet was run in two waves. ACGC’s boys team occupied five of the top ten spots in the first wave. Coach Colin Shawgo admits the 2nd wave featured tougher competition. Nonetheless Trevin Suhr crossed the finish line 1st and 3rd was Donnie Swanson. “They put themselves in really good position. We went out and destroyed the competition in the first wave.”
Jorja Hoover led the girls team. Coach Shawgo was impressed with the pack the team established. All five scoring runners finished in the top 20 of the first wave. Shawgo says the girls team, despite missing some key seniors, “Really went out and did pretty well I thought, especially in the conditions being around 96 at start time. It was extremely hot, but we ran really well as a pack.”
Coach Shawgo admits the heat this week as negatively impacted their training, but “Overall I think the mentality of the team took a step forward because we grew from that adversity.”
Next Saturday the team will travel to Pella for their second meet of the year.
