(Area) Crappie fishing at Lake Anita looks strong for years to come.
Bryan Hayes, Fisheries Biologist, says crappie fishing has been especially good at Lake Anita in recent years. “Three years ago there were a lot of nine inch fish. In 2019 it was more like ten inch fish and that’s pretty decent crappies.”
Crappie population can go up and down like a roller coaster. A recent electrofishing survey showed another good population trend. “Going over the top of some of the vegetation there are lots of little crappie in the lake. These are measuring five inches which means the next year’s crop has been established. Now we basically wait a couple of years until they hit that nine inch or acceptable size range.”
Hayes says stable weather patterns have a positive impact on crappie reproduction. Another helpful element is aquatic vegetation.
