(Audubon) KSOM/KS95.7 Sports recently caught up with Audubon softball coach Eric Borkowski to get a feel for what the Wheelers have in store this summer.
Audubon has only a couple of seniors to replace from last year. “We are going to be alright. We have girls that have played in those positions here and there. We should be able to fit girls into those positions we’ll be missing out on.”
This year’s seniors have made a lot of important contribution to Audubon girls sports over the last four years. The duo consists of Leah Subbert and Mallory Riebhoff. “They’ve done a great job the last five years for me. Leah’s been put in several different positions and has done a great job wherever I put her. Mallory has been consistent at second base and hopefully they continue to do the things they have their entire career.”
Freshman Kali Irlmeier is coming off of a strong debut season. Seven of the team’s eight wins came when she pitched and she recorded 87 strikeouts. “She has all sorts of potential. We have to make sure she stays healthy through the next four years. She has a lot of potential and can do a lot of good things in the years to come.”
Coach Borkowski identifies Kaitlin Nielsen and Sydney Beymer as two players that can provide a lot of help in the batting order. “Kaitlin Nielsen played centerfield for us and did a lot of good things. She made a lot of contact and hopefully this year she can find more gaps. Sydney Beymer was an all-conference player for us and when people were on base she hit them in. Those are two girls that I think can help us out a lot.”
Audubon went 8-22 last season, but six of those wins were in the final 2.5 weeks of the season. Coach Borkowski says it was a matter of coming together as a team.
