(Anita) Most of the productivity from last season returns for the CAM softball team. Coach Larry Hunt welcomes back 80% of the lineup.
“We lost two big ones in Macy Ticknor and Shelby Stephenson, but most of our top bats are coming back. Going into the winter I was really excited about coming back with this group of players.”
Reese Snyder, Grace Kauffman, Marissa Spieker, Jozie Lett, Taylor Bower, Molly Venteicher, and Allison Spieker are among the players that saw a lot of time last year, plus there’s others waiting in the wings.
“Even the competition we have with some younger kids will help. Maddy McKee, Maddy Holtz, Mallory Behken, and Bree Bower will all challenge the starters.”
Two sophomores have already logged a lot of varsity innings in their career. Those pitchers are Helen Riker and Marissa Spieker.
“They’ve learned a lot. They both started as 8th graders so they’ve learned a lot. They are physically stronger and they are going to be leading us. With the defense we can put behind them they are going to be pretty tough.”
Last season CAM finished 9-16 with over half their wins coming in the last three weeks of the year. Allison Spieker led the team in batting average at .369 while Jozie Lett was tops on the team in both home runs with three and RBI with 12.
Coach Hunt believes speed will be a strength of the team. They’ll get plenty of miles in right away with consecutive road games at Woodbine, Griswold, Whiting, and East Union on the first four nights of the season. Play begins June 15th.
