(Area) Audubon was a team to beat in the 1960’s and early 1970’s in boys golf. The Wheelers brought home three state championships and were runners-up twice in that span. Scott Ross and Jim Madsen are among the most decorated high school golfers in Audubon History.
Atlantic has claimed two titles (1963, 1985) and finished second three times (1958, 1965, 1987). Chad Proehl, Chad Speer, and Ryan Morrison have all won individual state championships for the Trojans.
AvoHa also has a strong history with a 1984 state championship and a 1982 team runner-up. Joel Peters was a key figure in the program’s glory days.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association archives have state tournament results dating back to the 2013 season. Details on team and individual qualifiers are listed at the end of this post.
A couple of notes on the format over the years. 1959 was the first state tournament that was split into two classifications. They went to a three class system in 1977 and moved to four classes in 1982. Additionally, in 1975 the tournament expanded from 18 holes to 36 holes.
