(Boone) Some changes to wrestling have been approved by the Iowa High School Athletic Association Board of Control. The wrestling advisory committee submitted five recommendations for consideration at the April meeting, and all five were unanimously approved.
Schools may opt out of dual team postseason events by the first competition date and there’s also a change to the qualifying process for regional duals. In the past the top two teams from each sectional site (in Class 1A and 2A) made the regional duals, but under the new format their will be 16 sectional champions that qualify plus the next eight highest ranked teams by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association. Traditional State Tournament seeding will reduce seeding criteria regarding common opponents from two points back to one point. All sixteen wrestlers will be seeded in each bracket at the state tourney. Tournament hosts are now allowed to determine the length of subvarsity matches for regular season events.
Changes go into effect for the 2020-21 season.
