(Denison) Iowa State Patrol Trooper and Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy reports the COVID-19 pandemic is resulting in lower-traffic counts on Iowa’s roadways; however, motorists are traveling at higher speeds.
McCreedy says the Iowa Department of Transportation determined recently highway traffic counts are down 50-percent from 2019. She says that includes the interstate systems and two-lane highways.
Trooper McCreedy says in Iowa, drivers lose their license if caught traveling 25-miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit. By comparison, as of March 31, 2020, 1,316 speeding citations were issued to motorists driving at speeds of 21-miles per hour over the posted limit, compared to 840 total citations issued for rates of 21-miles per hour in 2019.
McCreedy noted recently, Iowa went 11-straight days without a fatality, which is a state record.
