(Greenfield) Nodaway Valley sophomore Elliot Cooney is back in the state tournament for the 2nd time in his career while senior Austin Wilson has qualified for the first time. Each wrestler has a goal of earning a state medal this week in Des Moines.
The bracket was unforgiving for Cooney. He’s ranked 9th in the state with a career record of 78-9. His first round opponent will be none other than defending state champion and #1 rated Marcel Lopez, of New London. Cooney has state tourney experience to draw on from a year ago. He went 1-2 at Wells Fargo as a freshman with state tourney losses to the eventual runner up and eventual 5th place finisher.
Wilson looks to make the most of his last opportunity to don the Wolverine singlet. The Dordt football commit has put together a 40-1 record in his senior year. He’s undefeated against 1A competition and coach Jessee McCann believes Wilson is underrated at #9. Wilson will face 32-6 Cayden Miller, of Midland (Wyoming) in the first round.
Class 1A opening round action starts at 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening. KSOM and KS95.7 FM will have reports on the air each hour along with updates through our website and on Twitter.
