(Atlantic) Skyler Handlos scored 29-points to lead Atlantic past Red Oak 64-52 in a boys’ basketball game at Atlantic on Tuesday night.
Red Oak vaulted to a 13-12 first-quarter lead on an 8-2 run and a 27-23 lead at the break. The Tiger’s four baskets from long-range gave the visitors the edge. Garrett Couse, Ryan Johnson, Kaden Johnson and Nicholas Fouts each buried three-point shots to lead the charge.
Handlos hot hand and tighter defense turned the game around for Atlantic in the second half. Nile Petersen’s two-point bucket tied the game at 34-34 with 2:47 left to play in the third quarter, and Handlos, who scored 20-points in the second half, drained a free throw late in the frame to boost the Trojans to a 37-36 advantage. The Trojans extended the lead to 60-48 in the final frame and 64-52 at the final bell.
Baylor Bergren led Red Oak with 13-points, Kobe Johnson scored 12, Garrett Couse, 7, Ryan Johnson and Jacob Athen 6 points each, and Kaden Johnson and Nicholas Fouts ended the night with 3-points each.
Besides Handlos 29 points, Nile Petersen and Grant Sturm added 9-points each, Craig Alan Becker and Dayton Templeton, 6 points apiece, and Garrett Reynolds and Bradley Dennis, 2, and Ethan Williams chipped in one.
Atlantic now (5-6) on the season travels to Saydel on Friday night. Red Oak, (3-10) hosts Glenwood.
