(Atlantic) Easton Darling scored 28-points to lead Winterset past Atlantic 59-50 in non-conference boy’s basketball at Atlantic on Saturday afternoon.
Darling scored 22 of his 28-points in the first half. Dawson Forgy finished in double-figures with 12.
Skyler Handlos led the Trojans with 23-points, Nile Petersen added 9, Craig Allan Becker and Bradley Dennis each scored 6, Grant Sturm 4, and Spencer Ray finished the game with 2.
The Huskies, (5-1), jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never trailed in the game. The visitors built a 17-11 first-quarter advantage and extended their lead to 25-11 on an 8-0 run to start the second period. Easton Darling, averaging 23-points per game, buried four-three point shots and knocked down eight field-goals to lead the Huskies to a 34-22 lead at the break.
Winterset hit two free throws early in the third quarter to cushion their lead to 36-22, but the Trojans began cracking the Huskies 2-3 zone defense and mounted a 6-0 run to come within striking distance in the third quarter, 42-35. Atlantic trimmed the lead to (42-37), early in the final period, but the Huskies held off the Trojan rally down the stretch to secure the 59-50 victory.
Atlantic’s next game is at Shenandoah on January 3. Winterset hosts Perry on January 7.
