(Audubon) Audubon Pastor and Republican, Heath Hansen is running for the District 6 Iowa Senate seat in 2020. Hansen decided to run after current District 6 Senator Mark Segabart, of Vail, announced he would not seek re-election.
“We had been visiting, and at one point he said why don’t you consider running,” said Hansen. “This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. I’m western Iowa born and raised, and I care about the area. After consulting with my wife, we decided to go for it, and we’ll work as hard as we can.”
Hansen, who announced his intention to run in March, is running on three main issues. Conservation values are high on the list. He says the national media gives Republicans a bad rap when it comes to protecting the environment.
“I was raised by people that take care of the land. My dad was a hunter, and my neighbor worked for the DNR. And guess what, I’m pretty sure they all voted Republican,” said Hansen. “The people who take of the land; the farmers, ranchers, and the hunters care about the earth just as much or more than someone in the city looking at us and asking why don’t you care. We do care!
“When we started farming my father planted over 5,000 trees before he stopped counting-he didn’t stop planting trees, he just stopped counting,” recalls Hansen. “We can take care of our state, and it doesn’t have to be some “New Green Deal” thing that takes over everything that people may look at and say; oh you want to end all commerce, end flights, and kill all our “farting” cows. It doesn’t have to be anything like that. It can be responsible care of the environment, the people around it, and just being good stewards of the land. It’s an important thing.”
Hansen is also running on his Pro-Life beliefs and Pro-Second Amendment rights. “I’m Pro-Life, I believe in person-hood from conception to natural death,” said Hansen. “I am for second amendment rights. I think it’s necessary for people to have this right and we need to protect that.”
Heath Hansen is the Pastor at the Audubon Church of Christ along with troubled Western Iowa Youth at a facility in Manning. He and his wife Sarah have a three-year-old daughter Vesper.
Senate District 6 includes; the counties of Audubon, Carroll, Buena Vista and the eastern third of Crawford County.
