Fire crews from Red Oak, Elliott, Griswold, Macedonia, and Carson responded Tuesday afternoon to a combine fire near 490th and Pioneer Trail in rural southeast Pottawattamie County.
The Red Oak Fire Department says smoke from the blaze was visible from Red Oak, prompting mutual aid and assistance from area farmers using tractors and discs to control the fast-moving fire driven by high winds.
About 4 to 5 acres burned, including two large brush piles that caught fire in a nearby waterway. The fire was contained within two hours, and no injuries were reported.
Officials believe a hot ember or spark from the combine ignited dry vegetation. The landowner is working with a contractor to bury and cover the burned brush piles and will continue monitoring the area.
