(Audubon) Exira-EHK will travel to Audubon for their season opener Friday night. The game will air on 96.5 FM KSOM.
While the Wheelers graduated a lot of talented players, Exira-EHK coach Tom Petersen isn’t expecting to see much of a drop off. “The two Klocke’s (Ethan and Joel) they did some amazing things a year ago. Obviously you have Gavin Smith back at quarterback.” Petersen says, “It’s going to be a big task for us.”
Tyler Petersen is one of the few full-time starters that returns for Exira-EHK, but guys like Hunter Andersen, Wyatt Fahn, Easton Nelson, Trey Petersen, Tyler Kingery, and Dane Paulsen have at least a taste of varsity competition. “We have kids that have been there, just not consistently. There is a lot of potential that is there. My biggest concern is the speed of the game.” He adds, “You just don’t know until you have some games.”
Audubon County bragging rights are on the line. “The kids know each other. When you’ve got kids that live ten miles away from each other and Snapchat or whatever all that fun social media stuff is that I just love. They get in touch with each other, they know each other.”
Coach Petersen says taking on the 3rd ranked team in the state will give his team a good sense of where they stand and also prepare them for more strong opponents to come on their challenging 8-player District 8 schedule.
Pregame coverage starts with the In the Huddle program after the 5:00 news. The game can be streamed online at westerniowatoday.com or through the Western Iowa Today app.
