(Anita) Lance Lage is a Manning alum who played college football at Buena Vista. He had a lot of success along the way and became very interested promoting ideas to young people to have a chance like he did. Lage found his way to Cumberland-Massena for his first teaching and coaching jobs and made a career of it.
While teaming up with Dean Downer for C&M and then CAM, the teams turned in a successful run. Lage was asked what it took to build a winner. “Besides motivation you need a quarterback that knows what everyone is doing on the offensive side and we were good enough to have that. You also have to adapt your program to the kids you have.”
While he’s been out of coaching for many years, he still finds himself breaking things down anytime he watches a game. “I’ll sit with somebody and almost tell them what’s going to happen the next play. I liked to set up a lot of plays when I was coaching. I’d run a play here and there to set up a play. I liked trick plays. You run trick plays at certain times and they worked.”
