(Avoca) AHSTW football coach GG Harris wants to see more consistency as the team tries to improve on their 5-4 season in 2019.
Coach Harris has a lot of good things to report in the early going. “The weather has been cooperating, the kids are out there having a lot of fun, our camp week went well, numbers are up-we are kind of back into the 40’s-which is a big plus for us especially since we have only three seniors. There’s a lot of positives early. We are young. We have more linemen than we’ve had probably in the last five or six years. The future looks bright. Their focus and fire is ready right now so it’s been a good start.”
Blake Holst is back at quarterback and running back Denver Pauley returns. “We are looking for them to be a dynamic duo in the backfield this year. Whether it’s carrying the ball or just leading in the huddle and taking care of business on the offensive side. Then one plays safety and one plays linebacker so they are going to have to lead the charge on both sides of the ball.”
Kyle Jorgensen and Brayden Lund are the leaders up front. “Two young men that played a lot of snaps last year on the offensive and defensive line. Everything starts up front so we are really leaning on those two to set the tone. You have to be really sound in your technique and fundamentals. As a coaching staff we really recognize those two men really made a point to lead by example and do the right thing often.”
Wide receiver and defensive back Raydden Grobe is a returning all-state selection. “We are going to look to him to be a dominant player on the edge on both sides of the ball. We are going to have a lot of guys playing both ways. He’s going to be a go-to guy and everyone knows that. Regardless, if you’re a go-to guy you still have to find a way to execute and make plays. He’s had a good offseason and has come into camp rearing to go with a lot of confidence. He’s ready to take his game to the next level.”
Being well prepared is one of the things coach Harris keeps preaching to the team. He looks at St. Albert as a favorite in the district, but a lot of things are up in the air and a lot of teams will be improved from last year.
