(Walnut) Firefighters were called out to a structure fire at the Super 8 Hotel in Walnut on Saturday afternoon.
Walnut Fire Chief Justen Tooley tells KSOM/KS95 News that the call went out at around 12:15 p.m. at the Super 8 Hotel at 2109 Antique City Drive north of Walnut.
The hotel was evacuated before firefighters arrived.
“When we arrived there were flames and smoke coming from the northwest corner above the entrance to the Office area of the Hotel, stated Tooley, and heavy smoke some flames upon entry inside the building. We were able to attack some of the flames from outside the structure.”
Firefighters contained the fire to the northwest wing of the hotel. Tooley says there is heavy smoke damage throughout the entire second floor. “The heat of the day was the biggest issue, and we don’t have a water supply on the north side of the Interstate, so water had to be hauled in.”
The Walnut, Avoca, Hancock, Marne, Minden, and Harlan Fire Departments responded to the scene, along with the Atlantic Fire Department ladder truck, Medivac, and Shelby County Emergency Management.
“I want to thank all of the fire departments that helped out in this heat,” said Tooley.
