(Avoca) AHSTW hosts Missouri Valley Tuesday in baseball. We’ll have the game on KSOM.
Coach Jason Holst says they had a good finish to their first week of the season. After a loss to Tri-Center in the opener they came back to beat Riverside and Treynor before the week was through. Holst says they got better every time out and of course the 2-0 win over Treynor on Friday was a big one. “We had our backs against the wall several times. We had bases loaded at least once and worked out of it. They hit a triple and didn’t score. The way we battled out of adversity and the poise they displayed is what I was expecting with such an experienced team.”
There are eight seniors for AHSTW and most of them have multiple years of varsity action. “What they’ve been contributing is their experience especially with Sam Porter, Clayton Akers, and Joey Cunningham who have thrown a lot of innings. Then they way they can work together. They are all pretty good friends and will pick each other up on the field.”
The first week of the season proved there are several competitors in the Western Iowa Conference. “Anybody can do anything on any given night. What makes playing in our conference so exciting and sometimes heartbreaking at the same time is there a lot of good teams and good players. That’s what makes the game fun.”
Entering this week, Underwood and Tri-Center are the lone league unbeaten while AHSTW, Logan-Magnolia, and IKM-Manning all have one WIC loss. Treynor and Audubon each have one conference win.
