(Des Moines) Iowa lawmakers pass a bill moving the state forward no matter how small it is to prevent injustices from occurring.
Iowa House District 20 Representative Tom Moore says the bill changes law enforcement actions, investigations, hiring practices, and annual training. Additionally, the bill allows the attorney general to investigate death caused by law enforcement. The new also prohibits the use of a chokehold except in cases of life and death. It also prevents officers and reserve officers from being hired in Iowa fired for serious misconduct.
Moore says the bill also clarifies when an officer can have their certification revoked or suspended. And it sets out de-escalation techniques and prevention of bias training.
The bill surfaced Thursday and was debated simultaneously in the House and Senate before passing both chambers unanimously.
