(Avoca) Avoca Police Chief Mike Porter is seeking volunteers to help formulate a plan to stay ahead of the game in regards to COVID-19, or any other future disaster affecting their town.“We can’t rely on others, we have to help ourselves,” said Chief Porter.
Volunteers are currently needed for the virus. However, Chief Porter admits this same plan could’ve been implemented a year ago during the flood. He said instead of making 30 calls for help with sandbagging, under this plan a list of volunteers will be available to him at a moment’s notice.
“In the event, the Governor quarantines people to the homes, I’m going to need some help making sure the citizens and businesses are safe during my off hours,” said Porter.
The “Foodland ”grocery store in Avoca is implementing a program to deliver groceries to the elderly and others in need. Those needs are to call the store with a grocery list, the staff will put it all together, and the items will be delivered to the person’s door.
Payment can be made by credit or debit card, or if writing a check, contact City Hall and Chief Porter will come to the home and pick it up.
Volunteers wishing to help out Chief Porter are asked to call the City Hall at 712-343-2424.
