(Atlantic) Atlantic School’s Superintendent Steve Barber at Wednesdays’ school board meeting commented on the Iowa House and Senate’s passing of the School Supplemental Aid package.
“Last week the Senate and the House agreed on Supplemental aid at 2.3-percent with $10.00 toward equalizing per-pupil costs,” said Barber, adding, there are other bills on the table including the Class Clearing bill. “A lot of work is being done on the Class Clearing bill with priority placed on staff and student safety. It will be interesting to see what the final bill looks like.”
Mr. Barber says the District missed one day of school. The future makeup date will be addressed at the April meeting, although he mentioned a lot depends on the current outbreak of COVID-19. “Obviously, with Coronavirus, we’re not in the panic mode, but we’re paying attention to all of the updated news at this time. Hopefully, we’ll prepare for the worst and hope for the best type of situation. We’ll know in a couple of weeks if anything comes from that arena as well, which might create some additional challenges.”
Barber also talked about the future of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association curriculum. The AOPA curriculum began this past year to offer the program for four years to area students. Barber says next year; the curriculum will provide for two sections. The District is also considering an Aviation exploratory for 6th graders to expose middle school students to see if this is something they’re interested in, and possibly add to their initial career planning in 8th grade.
