(Des Moines) Democrat Rob Sand of Decorah has won Iowa’s race for governor, defeating Republican Zach Lahn. Crawford County supervisor Dave Muhlbauer will serve as lieutenant governor.
The 44-year-old has served as Iowa State Auditor since 2019. Prior to that, he was assistant attorney general and prosecutor who handled public corruption cases. As governor, he plans to lower living costs, increase funding for public schools, support rural communities, and continue to work across party lines.
Sand will be sworn into office on January 19, 2027. 67-year-old Republican Kim Reynolds has served as Iowa’s governor since 2017 and did not run for re-election.
