(Underwood, IA) — Underwood’s football team overcame a slow start and beat East Sac County 35-7 in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. Sophomore QB Nash Mitchell threw for 205 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT. Sophomore River Allen ran for 111 yards and 3 TD. Junior Maddox Mechaelsen had 3 catches for 86 yards and 1 TD. The Eagles led 14-7 at the half but broke it open with 21 points in the 3rd quarter. Head Coach Nate Mechaelsen says they really did not deserve to lead at the half
For whatever reason, Underwood has had issues with starting football games. Mechaelsen says its an emphasis every week but right now the message is not hitting home with the guys
Senior Charlie Myers has been out with a broken arm for a few weeks now and Allen has accepted the majority of the rushing carries. It has also affected Underwood’s defense but Senior Nathan Zylstra has stepped in and had 6.5 tackles last week
Underwood is now 8-1 and will host 8-1 South Central Calhoun this Friday.
