(NAFB News Service) The idea of using food as medicine is gaining traction among policymakers and health care leaders. During a discussion on nutrition and public health, Dr. Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, argued that better diets could improve health outcomes while reducing health care costs.
Oz believes health care institutions should lead by example in the food they provide patients.
In addition, Oz says nutrition needs a bigger role in educating future health care professionals.
Oz says improving nutrition education and encouraging healthier food choices are key parts of a broader effort to prevent chronic disease before it starts. He says this will help Americans live healthier lives while lowering long-term health care costs.
