(Neola, IA) — Treynor asserted their control of Class 1A, District 8 with a 27-12 win over Tri Center on Friday night.
The Cardinals Riley Lauver caught three TD passes to help Treynor to the win and he did it on his birthday. Early in the 2nd quarter, Kratyn Dirks found the Senior on a 32 yard TD pass to amke it 7-0.
Finn Mieska for Treynor fumbled a punt return for the game’s first turnover but Tri Center could not move the ball and a bad snap on a punt gave the Cardinals great field position at the Trojans 22 and Dirks found Lauver for a 7 yard TD pass to make it 14-0 at the half.
Tri Center got back into the game on the 2nd play of the 2nd half as AJ Harder found Rylan Ring on the sideline and he raced down the field for a 66 yard TD pass. The extra point was no good and Treynor led 14-6.
After the teams exchanged punts, Treynor got it back and on 4th and 8, Dirks found Lauver for a 38 yard TD pass to make it 21-6.
Brock Casey of Treynor got an interception on a tipped pass late in the 4th quarter as the Trojans were trying to rally and that set up a Dustin Dreyer 8 yard TD run to make it 27-6.
Tri Center added a 19 yard TD pass from AJ Harder to Steven Ring but the Cardinals ran out the clock.
Both teams suffered key injuries — Treynor’s starting running back came out of the game early in the third quarter and did not return. The Cardinals lineman Will Sadir also got hurt and slowly limped off the field not putting any weight on his right ankle. Tri Center’s Kane Daughenbaugh suffered an injury as well late in the first half and did not return.
