(Creston) A Lenox man wanted on multiple felony warrants in Polk County was taken into custody Tuesday following a four-hour standoff with law enforcement in Creston.
According to the Creston Police Department, officers received information at approximately 10:16 a.m. on September 22, 2026, that 47-year-old Jerry Williams of Lenox was inside a residence at 305 North Elm Street. Polk County wanted Williams on multiple felony warrants related to burglary charges.
Officers from the Creston Police Department and the Union County Sheriff’s Office responded to the residence and attempted to contact Williams. As officers approached, they could hear him barricading the doors.
Officers attempted to communicate with Williams both in person and by telephone. During the communications, Williams made multiple statements indicating he would not return to prison.
Officers requested assistance from the Iowa State Patrol. Members of the Iowa State Patrol Tactical Team and trained negotiators responded to the scene, where law enforcement personnel spent approximately four hours attempting to negotiate Williams’ peaceful surrender.
After those efforts were unsuccessful, officers deployed chemical munitions containing CS gas inside the residence.
Approximately 45 minutes later, Williams exited the residence onto the roof. He eventually climbed down and surrendered to law enforcement without further incident.
Officers took Williams into custody and transported him to the Union County Jail, where he was held on the outstanding warrants and a new charge of interference with official acts.
The Creston Police Department was assisted by the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa DNR, Creston Fire Department, Greater Regional Health EMS, and Union County Emergency Management.
The Creston Police Department expressed its appreciation to all responding agencies, stating their teamwork, patience, and professionalism helped bring the incident to a safe resolution.
