(Lewis) — Iowa’s youth deer hunting season starts today.
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen, appearing on the KSOM DNR Show, says for many young hunters, this will be their first experience hunting deer.
Lorenzen says each youth hunter must be under the direct supervision of an adult mentor who has a valid license and habitat stamp. Youth tags are valid statewide and can be used for any legal deer.
Another benefit of youth tags is that they can be used in any subsequent deer season, provided all other rules for that season are followed.
Party hunting with a youth tag is prohibited; the deer must be harvested by the youth holding the tag.
