(Des Moines) A flood warning remains in effect through 9:45 a.m. CDT this morning for portions of southeastern Fremont County and west-central Page County in southwestern Iowa, where recent heavy rainfall has caused minor flooding along the East Nishnabotna River.
According to the National Weather Service, small-stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues in the warned area. At approximately 6:20 a.m. CDT, river gauges indicated that the East Nishnabotna River was rising, with minor flooding confirmed by local emergency management officials.
The flooding is affecting areas near Riverton, particularly along 250th Street west of Riverton, as well as other low-lying locations near and north of the community along the river.
Communities that could experience flooding include Shenandoah, Farragut and Riverton.
Residents in affected areas are urged to use caution, particularly when traveling. Officials remind motorists to never drive through flooded roadways. Even relatively shallow moving water can be dangerous, and drivers are encouraged to turn around and find an alternate route when encountering flooded roads.
People should also remain aware of changing conditions and avoid low-lying areas where flooding is occurring. Anyone who observes flooding is encouraged to report it to local emergency services or law enforcement when it is safe to do so. Reports can then be relayed to the National Weather Service to assist with monitoring conditions.
The flood warning is scheduled to remain in effect until 9:45 a.m. CDT, although conditions could change depending on rainfall and river levels.
