(Des Moines) Several Iowa state parks will host volunteer events on September 26 as part of Volunteer Day, giving people an opportunity to help improve trails, buildings, and other park amenities.
John Lorenzen, Fisheries Biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says those interested in volunteering can learn more about Volunteer Day and find events at participating parks at www.iowadnr.gov/volunteer.
If you plan to volunteer but inclement weather is in the forecast, contact the individual park where you plan to help to check for any event changes or cancellations.
Local Volunteer Day events include:
- Lake Anita State Park: Volunteers will meet at the park office from 9 to 11 a.m. Plans include picking up trash throughout the park.
- Prairie Rose State Park: The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers should meet at the park office and will help paint picnic tables. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the work.
- Springbrook State Park: Volunteers will meet from 10 a.m. to noon to help remove invasive plants from pollinator plots. Those participating are encouraged to bring their own pruners or loppers, if available.
