(Atlantic) “In remembrance of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, American Legion Post #43 in Atlantic has installed a bench at the Atlantic City Park to honor the first responders who rushed to the Twin Towers after the hijacked planes struck.”
A few years ago, Leonard Kinney, Commander of American Legion Post #43 in Atlantic, started a 911 program.
He says the “Never Forget” bench built by Weirich Welding in Lewis will serve as a remembrance of the people, along with the first responders who lost their lives on that day. Kinney says the nation lost 343 people that day, who were not killed by an act of terrorism, but because of it.
The effort of the first responders on September 11, 2001 hits close to home.
Kinney explains the bench represents the timeline of when the first plane struck at 8:46 Eastern time on the morning of September 11, 2001. At 9:03 Eastern Standard Time, the second hijacked plane struck the second tower. He says 2,763 people lost their lives, including the 343 first responders. Also, on the bench highlights Flight #77’s crash at the Pentagon, costing 189 people their lives. Flight #93, where the passengers tried to take over the plane, crashed after the terrorists refused to give up.
The bench will be dedicated during a ceremony at Atlantic City Park on September 11 to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
